Add only decorative elements that are in character with the style and period of the architecture. Historically, wall signs were painted for advertising purposes. Retain and preserve original or early cornices , string courses , wall fi nishes, pilasters , and other decorative elements of historic commercial buildings. 1 If part of or the entire facade element has deteriorated, repair the deteriorated section using only materials compatible with the original. 2 6 It is not appropriate to mount or paint murals on commercial buildings. 7 Paint colors should be appropriate for the style of the building. Color schemes should attempt to unify elements of the building and take into account all exterior details. They should also complement the colors of the surrounding buildings.
